Cain sat alone. His lightweight, white feather lay there on the desk infront of him. A slight exhale through the nose caused the damned thing to move!
Cain, however, was optimistic. He remembered back in the shop of what he done, and thought it would be easy to accomplish here once more. Boy was he wrong!
He flicked to the prescribed page of his newly-bought book "Standard Book Of Spells, Grade 1" and read. It had precise instructions on performing the Levitating Charm, although Cain was in two minds on how to pronounce the incantation. He pulled out his Dragon Heartstring Wand, and just looked at it. He really was a Wizard.
He then turned his attention onto the feather on his desk and cleared his throat. Here it goes, he thought, and pointed to the feather.
"Wingardium Leviosa!"
Nothing happened.
"Great" he murmured, and had a closer look at the Charm's entry in the Standard Book Of Spells, Grade 1. There! A.... a hand movement. That's what was missing!
He practiced first, reading and saying the "swish and flick" as he copied the actions illustrated in the book. Once he thought he got it exact everytime, he turned back to his feather.
Clearing his throat once more, Cain moved his Wand from left to right and then from up to down, thinking in his head "swish and flick", while saying "Winguardrium Levioser!". Nothing happened.
Maybe he was pronouncing it wrong again? That must be it. After all, he was surely doing the hand-movements correct, wasn't he?
After several other attempts of diciphering the text in the book, there was only one other logical way of pronouncing the incantation.
Taking a deep breath, Cain allowed his Wand to guide him this time, performing the "swish and flick" motion almost subconsciencely as he took care to pronounce every single syllable.
"Wingardium Leviosa!" He said. Nothing happened. Cain's blood was seething with rage at this point, and he flew his hands up in the air in frustration, and the feather followed!
"What the...?" he began, and the feather glided in a different direction after Cain stopped concentrating. He coughed, sniggered, and gradually went into a frenzy of giggling and snorting. Of course! How could he be so stupid?!
He had performed the spell correctly, but of course it wouldn't levitate if he didn't move his Wand accordingly! There.... he done it.
"Now... where did that feather go?" he said almost absent-mindedly. His first Charm, his first Charm! He succeded!
